For those living with celiac disease, organizing a holiday often turns into an exhausting test of psychological resistance. The constant threat of cross-contamination in dishes, the obligation to question waiters and the lack of variety in traditional menus (not to mention total absence, and I speak from personal experience) deprive travelers of light-heartedness.
However, an epochal turning point is ready to set sail – literally – in May 2028, promising to eliminate every source of anxiety related to food. A historic special cruise will in fact radically eliminate the presence of wheat and derivatives from the entire vessel, transforming every single refreshment point into a protected and certified oasis.
The birth of the project and the turning point on board Oceania Vista
Behind this tourism innovation lies the experience of Celiac Cruise, an agency founded in 2018 by Maureen Basye in Virginia, born after the diagnosis of the pathology on her four-year-old son Peter. The business initially involved reserving individual dining areas on Royal Caribbean ships, but strong demand pushed the company to expand into luxury vessels.
In collaboration with the Celiac Disease Foundation and the Oceania Cruises company, the partnership will create an exclusive itinerary from 31 May to 12 June 2028 on board the jewel of the seas Oceania Vista, a culinary flagship that will travel for twelve nights among the breathtaking landscapes of the British Isles.

Eleven starred restaurants and no sacrifices for the palate
The truly extraordinary element of the initiative lies in the total abolition of gluten from every kitchen, pantry or cafeteria on the ship for the entire duration of the voyage. Guests will have the opportunity to dine in eleven high-level gastronomic establishments, being able to order any course without fear of feeling ill. The range of choices will range from traditional Tuscan specialties to fine cuts of meat at the Polo Grill steakhouse, to Asian dishes at Red Ginger and the flavors of classic French cuisine at Jacques, complemented by 24-hour room service.

A dream itinerary and the power of social sharing
While on-board staff receive rigorous food safety training, the ship will sail the seas from the Port of Southampton. The journey includes important cultural and historical stops, touching the coasts of Dublin, Liverpool and the village of Cobh, before moving towards the beauty of the Scottish Highlands, the Orkney Islands and Edinburgh.
Beyond the purely culinary aspect, the experience on board aims to create a strong sense of belonging among people who share the same daily difficulties and who, finally, for a few days can eat in complete tranquility and without the risk of feeling ill.
