What is a biodistrict
According to the competition regulations, a biodistrict is a territory in which farmers, citizens, tourist operators, associations and public bodies sign an agreement to manage local resources according to the principles of organic agriculture. The category is organized by the European Committee of the Regions, the jury also includes the Commission, the EU Parliament and Council, Copa-Cogeca and IFOAM Organics Europe.

The award was received by President Andrea Campurra, who also leads the National Network of Organic Districts, and Vice President Giorgio Demurtas, President of Coldiretti Cagliari. Campurra explained that the district has given a home to those in Sardinia who have always believed in organic farming, often with great sacrifices. For the regional councilor for Agriculture Francesco Agus this is a great result for the island and its producers.
The other winners
Italy had another finalist, Turin, in the organic city category. However, the prize went to Cussac-Fort-Médoc, a French municipality in the Gironde with just over two thousand inhabitants, where 50% of the products in the school canteens are organic, and half of the fresh vegetables come from a municipal garden next to the school.
In the European Union, organic farming now occupies around 17 million hectares, around 11% of the agricultural surface, while the strategy From producer to consumer sets a target of 25% by 2030.
