THE’lake effectwhich occurred north of the city, caused heavier snowfall with accumulations exceeding 60 centimetres in some locations.

It won’t be a White Christmas

Despite the initial enthusiasm for the return of snow, the forecast for New Yorkers. While the fallen snow has enriched the city with a Christmas atmosphere, temperatures are destined to increase in the following days, drastically reducing the possibility of maintaining the snow cover.

Meteorologist Marissa Lautenbacher explained that for it to be considered a White Christmas, at least a couple of inches of snow must remain on the ground at 7 a.m. on December 25. Forecasts indicate that temperatures they could rise above zero before the holidaysmaking it unlikely that the few centimeters of snow will remain intact until Christmas Day.

The last time New York experienced a White Christmas was in 2009when 5 cm of snow had covered the city. In 2024, though, it looks like that won’t happen again, with New Yorkers may have to settle for a snow-free Christmas.

However, the cold will persist with highs that were below zero even yesterday, albeit with some timid rays of sunshine. A snowfall that also created some inconvenience for those traveling, with numerous delays and cancellations at the main airports in the citylike JFK, LaGuardia and Newark, but which gave New Yorkers a taste of winter magic by whitening the city’s skyline.
