Spery in action: fines coming for those who overtake where it is prohibited, how does it work?

In Italy a new device arrives to increase road safety: the overtaking. It works in a similar way to the autovelox, but it is designed to specifically monitor the overtaking forbidden, especially in critical points such as blind curves, bumps or strokes with continuous line.

How it works

Sensors in the road surface detect the maneuver, while video cameras record a short movie that is sent to the Operations Center. If the infringement is confirmed, the penalty in deferred starts, without the need to stop the motorist at the moment.

As with other automatic control systems, the overtaking must also be reported with clear signs. Before installation, the approval of the prefect and the competent authorities, such as Anas, is needed. Only documented traits as dangerous can be monitored: areas with high number of accidents, risky deviations or frequent violations of the highway code. This ensures that the tool is not used at random, but in a targeted way for the prevention of accidents.

Penalties and consequences

Fines high from the overtaking can be heavy. Standard infringements include penalties of up to 665 euros and the loss of 10 points from the license. In the most dangerous features, such as curves or high -risk crossings, the amount can rise up to 1,308 euros. In addition, if the forbidden overtaking takes place between 22:00 and 7:00, the fine increases by a third, to further protect night safety.

The overtaking of Acquappasa

Recently, the municipality of Acquappesa, in Cosentino, has activated the overtaking along the 18 Tirrena state road. The goal is to monitor a stretch for some time subject to accidents and risseed overtaking, especially during the summer, when traffic increases. The mayor stressed that the device integrates other control systems, such as Scout Speed, for a more complete management of violations and to protect motorists and pedestrians.

Towards greater road safety

The overtaking represents a step forward in the prevention of accidents. By allowing automatic control and deferred sanction, it reduces the need for physical presences of the authorities, while increasing the discipline to driving. Targeted and regulated installations promise to make critical roads more secure, educating motorists to comply with the rules and limiting risky behaviors.
