Stained socks will turn white if you use these cheap household ingredients

White socks are one of the hardest things to keep really clean. You buy them white, wear them a couple of times and within a few weeks they become dull, greyish or with that horrible yellow halo that makes them look old even if they aren’t. The reason is simple: sweat, sebum and dirt penetrate the fibers and normal washing is no longer enough.

The most common reaction is to use bleach. It seems logical, but in reality it is often the worst choice. The aggressive substances in bleach react with sweat proteins and end up setting stains instead of eliminating them. Result: even more yellow socks and weakened fabric.

A much smarter alternative is the baking sodaone of the most effective household ingredients for white laundry. Being alkaline, it counteracts the acidity of sweat stains and helps dissolve accumulated dirt. Just add about 100–120 grams together with the detergent and start a cold wash. Hot water, in fact, tends to set stains and dull the white, not the other way around.

Baking soda also has another benefit: it eliminates odors. It doesn’t cover them, it neutralizes them. This means cleaner socks and without that annoying “used” smell even after washing.

Clearly stated, however, bicarbonate alone is not always enoughespecially if the socks are very damaged or neglected for a long time. In these cases it is best to combine it with other simple but effective remedies.

THE’white vinegarused instead of fabric softener, dissolves detergent residues that dull the fabric and helps keep the white brighter. No final odor, if washing is done correctly.

The sodium percarbonate it’s even more powerful: it’s active oxygen and works great on old stains. It should be used to soak in warm water for about an hour before washing.

For the most critical areas, such as the heel and toe, thehydrogen peroxide (10 volumes) mixed with a little bicarbonate creates an effective whitening paste to be applied before laundry.

Finally, the most underestimated remedy: the sun. Drying socks outdoors takes advantage of the natural whitening action of UV rays and enhances the effect of any treatment.

The truth is this: no miracle solutions, but by combining the right remedies you can stop throwing away good socks just because they seem unrecoverable. And without destroying them with bleach.
