The fairy tale of Cinderella is preparing for an unexpected revisitation. Over seventy years after the 1950 animated classic, Disney looks beyond the princess and turns the spotlight on Anastasia and Genoveffa, the two stepsisters who for decades have embodied the most ironic and antagonistic side of the story. It will be a live-action project, with a provisional title Stepsisters (i.e. “stepsisters”) and promises to overturn the point of view and tell the universe of the fairy tale through the eyes of those who, until now, have remained in the background.
The operation is part of the studio’s strategy of reinterpreting classics with new perspectives, following in the wake of films that transformed villains into protagonists. This time, however, the tone could be more ironic, modern and irreverent, while still maintaining the fairy-tale atmosphere that made the original story immortal.
The creative team and the tone of the project
Behind the camera will be Akiva Schaffer, former director of the irreverent Chip & Dale special agents. The screenplay was born from an idea by Michael Montemayor, subsequently reworked by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, authors known for their brilliant and contemporary style. The choice of names suggests a film with a dynamic and original edge, capable of mixing comedy, emotion and a fairytale reinterpretation.
It will therefore not be a simple remake, but an alternative narrative, potentially capable of humanizing the stepsisters and showing their fragility, ambitions and contradictions. In the animated classic, Anastasia and Genoveffa were primarily caricatural figures, often manipulated by their stepmother Lady Tremaine. The new project could instead give them an autonomous voice, exploring what happens beyond the glass slipper.
Possible ideas from the animated saga
The rumors leave several hypotheses open given that for the moment there are no official announcements on the plot. The film could be inspired by the narrative developments of animated sequels such as Cinderella II – When dreams come truewhere Anastasia shows a more sensitive side by falling in love with a baker, or a Cinderella III – The game of fatewhich introduces a more adventurous plot tied to the magic of the Fairy Godmother.
It is not yet clear whether Stepsisters it will be a prequel, sequel or complete reinterpretation, but the direction appears clear: transforming two antagonists into protagonists, offering a more complex reading of the fairy tale. A change of perspective that could redefine the imagery linked to one of the most beloved stories in Disney history.
As mentioned, crucial details still remain to be revealed: the cast, the release date and the possible presence of Cinderella in the story. But if the conditions are respected, Stepsisters it could transform the fairy tale’s clumsiest rivals into unexpected protagonists, ready to rewrite their destiny far from the princess’s shadow.
