A risky selfie risked turning into tragedy in the Cinque Terre, where a 22 -year -old young Trentino tourist ended up at sea after being overwhelmed by a wave. Everything happened in Vernazza, on the pier of ferries, during a agitated sea day. The girl, regardless of the weather conditions, was photographing when she was sucked into the water.
To avoid the worst was the heroic gesture of a waiter of a restaurant who dived without hesitation to help her. Some young people in the country were united, who with great effort brought her back to the shore and practiced her heart massage waiting for the rescue. The tourist was then transported to the hospital and discharged in the following days.
Close against tourism at risk: selfies prohibited
To prevent such episodes from being repeated, the Municipality has decided to react decisively: it will be forbidden to take selfies in all the most dangerous areas of the village, including the areas exposed to the moved sea and the paths overhanging. Those who transgress will be sanctioned, as announced by the mayor Marco Fanelli:
We have adopted several security measures. The signs, the red flag and the rope that delimits the area unfortunately are ignored by tourists. – explained the first citizen to Corriere della Sera – the local police are present, check and now he will sanction the transgressors.
An example to follow also in the other villages
The case lit the spotlight on the increasingly widespread phenomenon of the so -called unconscious tourism, fueled by the search for the perfect shot to share online. The neighboring municipalities of Monterosso and Riomaggiore would be evaluating the introduction of similar measures, to counter a behavior that puts the life of those who practice it and any rescuers at risk.
In the meantime, in Vernazza, young people who have saved the tourist are asked to receive official recognition. In the hope that recognition of this type no longer need.
