“Summer song” is not the usual catchphrase: Annalisa’s new single is an invitation to free yourself from labels and expectations

Annalisa’s new single has just been released, entitled “Summer Song”. Stopping at the title, someone might immediately think that it is yet another light catchphrase that will obsess us between now and the summer, but the Ligurian artist wants to go further.

The piece plays on the contrast of identities and the conflict between opposites, summarized in the provocative verse “Do you want me more like a nun or a porn star?”. The same duality is at the center of the official video, where the singer appears with a dress divided in half that represents two contrasting personalities.

In the visual story, however, a third dimension emerges: the most authentic one, which arises from the balance between extremes and invites us to accept ourselves for what we are.

A song that wants to overcome labels

This new single from Annalisa uses pop to address a serious topic: that of the pressure exerted on women and the continuous request to adhere to opposing models.

The line “Do you want me more of a nun or a porn star?” it is the center of the discussion. It is not just a provocation, but the synthesis of a very deep-rooted cultural mechanism: women are often asked to choose between irreconcilable images, between purity and sensuality, discretion and ostentation, composure and freedom. It is a violent simplification, because it reduces the complexity of the person to two labels that are easy to judge. Because after all, as we know, for many women are either “saints or whores”.

This is the song with which I declare my love. And my anger. It’s the song with which I say enough. – Annalisa herself clarifies on her social channels – But then I want more. It’s the song where I’m right, but maybe I’m doing it all wrong. This is the song where I joke a little. But I’m very serious. And I’m a really good girl, but then I get mean. Some say nun, some porn star. Both and neither I say, too easy like that. And I would like to be the one you like, I would like you to like me as I am, I would like. But how do you want me? Here you are. This is the song with which I address opinions, including my own. And I compare them.

“Summer song” also contains an invitation: “go in peace and so be it”, a phrase that pushes us to shake off the expectations of others, which often hinder us and do not allow us to be fully ourselves.

“Summer song”: the lyrics

When Venus is in Leo you can’t talk
I know things you could never understand
When I go down
In the sickest and most useless thought
We’ve lost the thread

You are in my erotic dream
I’m burning in the hot flames
Non-Catholic thought
Aren’t you offended?

And don’t change the subject
If you ask me how I’m doing
You’re a damn electroshock
And then a boost of self-esteem
Maybe I was better before
Of your crazy nostalgia
Go in peace and so be it
Do you want me more of a nun or porn star?
This is not a summer song
You’re a hyena, you’re a problem
And this is why a love ends
That wasn’t there, maybe there was
And that’s why it ends

On the horse with wings it feels like flying (I have psychosis, paranoia)
Now you know I’m still all natural (How scary)
When I go down
To the bottom of that glass which is already halfway
We’ve lost the thread

You are in my erotic dream
I’m burning in the hot flames
Non-Catholic thought
Aren’t you offended?

And don’t change the subject
If you ask me how I’m doing
You’re a damn electroshock
And then a boost of self-esteem
Maybe I was better before
Of your crazy nostalgia
Go in peace and so be it
Do you want me more of a nun or porn star?
This is not a summer song
You’re a hyena, you’re a problem
And this is why a love ends
That wasn’t there, maybe there was
And that’s why it ends

When Venus is in Leo you can’t talk
And that’s why it ends

For that crazy nostalgia
Go in peace and so be it
Do you want me, can you be a nun or a porn star?
This is not a summer song

You’re a hyena, you’re a problem
And this is why a love ends
That wasn’t there, maybe there was
And that’s why it ends

(Hallelujah, hallelujah)
And this is why a love ends
(Hallelujah, hallelujah)
That wasn’t there, maybe there was
And that’s why it ends
