For many hours, now, now a vast and ruinous fire is affecting the town of Torrefeta, in the district of La Segarra (Lleida), in Catalonia. Two people are deceased: found inside the perimeter of the stake in the municipality of Ca conscò, about 20 km from the point of origin.
The stake, fueled by strong gusts of wind and high temperatures, has already burned At least 6 thousand hectares of agricultural land, in the largest fire recorded in Catalonia in recent years.
Despite the vastness of the flames, the firefighters have managed to stabilize the fire front and are now focusing on the revision of the entire perimeter to exclude further victims and to prevent reactivations, above all due to the heat wave, with record temperatures close to 40 degrees that persist in some regions of the Iberian peninsula.
Confinses and risk for the population
Due to the dense smoke, about 20 thousand residents in nine neighboring municipalities were invited to stay at home with closed doors and windows.
The smoke in fact reached 300 km away, forming an estimated 14 km diameter column – an unprecedented situation in Catalonia. The stake was powered by extremely high winds of wind and temperatures, until it touches 40 ° C in some areas of the peninsula:

At the moment, the main flames are under control thanks to the work of the firefighters, but the risk remains high, due to the extreme heat which, as in Italy, will continue for the next few days and the wind.
