The best wellness center in the world is an hour from Rome: it has more than a hundred years of history (and it’s not just a simple SPA)

In 2025, the World Spa Awards awarded the title of best wellness retreat on the planet to an Italian structure. Not to a luxury bubble suspended in the Swiss Alps, nor to an Ayurvedic retreat in Sri Lanka. At Palazzo Fiuggi, in Lazio, about 80 km from the center of Rome.

A palace with a memory

Before becoming what it is today, Palazzo Fiuggi was already something. Built in 1913 in Art Nouveau style, immersed in an 8-hectare park, it hosted royalty, heads of state and film stars – including Vittorio Emanuele III – during the twentieth century. Then, as often happens with historic buildings, it entered a long phase of oblivion. The turning point came in 2021, with a reopening that did not simply restore the facades: it completely redesigned the vocation of the place, transforming it into one of the most advanced wellness clinics in the world.

Not a spa, but a clinic

The difference compared to any other resort with treatments and herbal teas lies in one concept: Evidence-Based Medicine. At Palazzo Fiuggi you don’t book a massage and sit by the pool. You access a high-level hospital diagnostic system — MRI, genetic analysis, biomechanical evaluation — managed by a multidisciplinary team of doctors. The goal is not relaxation as an end in itself, but to produce measurable results on the body.

The water that Michelangelo also used

At the center of it all is the thermal water of Fiuggi, famous for its purifying properties for centuries – it is said that even Michelangelo used it for his kidney stones. It is not folklore: the chemical characteristics of this water make it a clinically relevant element, and Palazzo Fiuggi integrates it into its paths not as an aesthetic detail but as a therapeutic tool.

Four wellness programs

The available routes are built around specific objectives. The Deep Detox works on the elimination of toxins and heavy metals. The program Longevity aims to slow down cellular aging processes. Optimal Weight it’s not a diet: it’s a complete metabolic re-education. Regeneratefinally, it is designed both for post-surgical recovery and for those who want to push their physical performance to a higher level. None of the four are package tours with some treatment attached.

Heinz Beck in the kitchen — but the doctor also writes the dishes

One of the most unusual elements of Palazzo Fiuggi is the signature in the kitchen: Heinz Beck, chef with three Michelin stars, collaborated directly with the medical team to build a food line that does not give up taste but responds to precise scientific criteria — reduction of inflammation, control of toxins, metabolic balance. The result is a cuisine that in another context you would call haute cuisine, but which here is an integral part of the therapeutic protocol.

How much it costs to detach yourself from the world

The introductory program Wellness Break — three nights in a Charme room with medical supervision, professional check-up and a treatment package that includes thalassotherapy, lymphostimulation, massages, hammam and sound therapy — starts from 3,200 euros in a single room. It’s not a figure for everyone, but the positioning is explicit: we are in the luxury medical wellness segment, the same one in which until yesterday Switzerland, Austria and some Asian destinations dominated.
