The biggest fears of Italians? War, poverty and climate crisis, but solidarity wills can change the future

We live in a fragile time. A time in which the fear of tomorrow weighs like a low cloud: the climate crisis, wars, poverty, health and access to care not always seen as fundamental rights. Yet, precisely in this uncertain scenario, Italians do not stop believing in good.

According to research by the Solidarity Testament Committee and Walden Lab, for almost six out of ten Italians (57%) the climate crisis is the main source of anxiety. The future appears bleak: 51% fear a worsening of society and only two out of ten manage to remain optimistic. Furthermore, almost half (48%) recognize the Third Sector as the most authentic driver of change, and eight out of ten consider it fundamental to building a fairer, more human, more alive world.

Italians, as we know, have generosity in their DNA: almost 7 out of 10 (67%) have already made at least one donation. Solidarity gestures for research, against poverty, for those living with disabilities, for the environment and for animals are growing. Signs of a collective conscience that, despite everything, does not go away.

The joint will

And when you look even further, beyond your own life, there are those who choose to leave a mark that cannot be erased: the legacy of solidarity. Between 2020 and 2024, organizations that received a bequest went from 61% to 77%, and their weight in fundraising almost doubled. Today, more than half a million Italians over 50 have already included a legacy in their will, and almost 5 million are thinking of doing so.

Because when the future is scary, the bravest response is to continue to believe in hope.

Even in the face of uncertainty, Italians demonstrate that solidarity is stronger than fear. A legacy is a way of saying: I will be there, even tomorrow, says Rossano Bartoli, spokesperson for the Solidarity Testament Committee and president of the Lega del Filo d’Oro.

The Solidarity Testament Committee, born in 2013 and now made up of 26 organizations – including WWF, Save the Children, Telethon, Legambiente, AIL, AISM and many others – continues to tell a simple truth: each of us can leave a sign of hope.
