The Eur lake will become suitable for swimming: it will host swimming and diving competitions (thanks to a major reclamation project)

The Laghetto dell’Eur is preparing for a radical transformation that will change the face of one of the most iconic spaces in Rome. By the end of 2027, the artificial basin will become permanently suitable for bathing, thanks to an intervention worth around 7.9 million euros promoted by Eur SpA, a company owned by the Ministry of Economy and Roma Capitale. This was announced by the CEO of Eur SpA Claudio CarserĂ . The plan is not only aesthetic, but aims at a permanent restoration of water quality, with standards that allow water activities in complete safety. A significant part of the funds, around 3.5 million euros, has already been allocated to technical analyses, hydrogeological studies and planning of the interventions necessary to restore the lake to optimal conditions.

From seabed mapping to sediment removal

After the initial analysis phase, the project came to life with the mapping of the state of the water, entrusted to Acea Infrastructure. This step is crucial to define the operational methods of the reclamation. The next step will be the start of the authorization process for the removal of sediments from the seabed, a complex operation that will affect the entire body of water, covering approximately 85,000 square metres. The lake, inaugurated in 1961 and on average 2.60 meters deep, requires precise and gradual interventions to guarantee lasting results. The operations will extend throughout 2027 and represent the technical heart of the intervention: this is where the possibility of obtaining truly clean and controlled water comes into play.

Not a public swimming pool, but a hub for international events

Those who imagine the pond transformed into a large city swimming pool will have to scale back their expectations. At least in the initial phase, the space will not be used for free bathing, but will be used as a facility for high-level sports competitions. The declared objective is to host swimming and diving competitions, including international ones, transforming the basin into a real open-air sports arena. Only at a later stage will it be possible to evaluate a wider opening to the public, but for now the priority remains sporting and technical.

A balance between environment, technology and city

The project is not just about sport, but also about the ecosystem. The improvement in water quality should have positive effects on local fauna, helping to strengthen the environmental balance of the pond. The intervention therefore marks a change of perspective: from a simple landscape element to a multifunctional space, where environment, technology and urban use meet. The Laghetto dell’Eur will not become a swimming pool, but something more complex and structured, designed to last over time.
