When silver necklaces, bracelets or earrings begin to lose their shine and take on a dull appearance, the temptation is to resort to specific products, if not more invasive treatments. In reality, there is a simple solution, within everyone’s reach, capable of restoring brilliance to jewelery in just 20 minutes, without aggressive detergents and with very little effort. The secret lies in a chemical reaction that uses everyday ingredients, effective against oxidation and suitable for even the most delicate pieces. Three very common elements and a container are enough to obtain excellent results.
What is needed for cleaning silver
To bring dull jewels back to life, you need a few materials: a plastic food container or similar container, a sheet of tinfoil, with baking soda, or with salt. In about 20 minutes, this method allows you to eliminate the oxidation that deposits on the surface of the silver.
Preparing the container
The first step consists in covering the bottom of the container with aluminum foil, taking care to place it with the shiny side facing upwards. At this point you can lay the jewels on the sheet, arranging them in an orderly manner.
If you decide to clean multiple necklaces together, you will have to pay particular attention, because during the reaction they could move slightly and become tangled. It is also important to check that each silver object is in direct contact with the foil, a fundamental detail for the correct functioning of the process.
Adding ingredients
Once the jewels have been arranged, proceed by sprinkling four or five tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate until the necklaces, earrings or bracelets in the container are completely covered. At this stage, if you want, you could also add a spoonful of salt.
The exposure time
At this point all that remains is to wait. The jewels should be left in the mixture for approximately 20 minutes. The oxidation will tend to dissolve almost immediately, but a longer exposure time will allow the chemical reaction to act even in the cracks and less accessible points of the silver, ensuring more uniform cleaning.
Rinsing and drying
After 20 minutes, the jewelery can be removed from the container. A quick rinse under water will suffice to remove any residue, followed by delicate drying with a kitchen towel. At this point, the silver will appear shiny again and ready to wear.
The mixture used can be safely poured into the sink and the process repeated whenever the need to clean other silver jewelery arises. A practical, fast and domestic method that will allow you to always keep your accessories at their best, without resorting to expensive or aggressive solutions.
