The city of Rome hosts the largest exhibition ever held in Italy on Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), a key figure of Japanese art and the bearer of a legacy that was able to overcome national borders and influence the rest of the world. From the famous “Great Wave” to the perspectives of Mount Fuji, up to the famous Manga, the master of Ukiyo-e can be defined as an extraordinary innovator capable of having a profound impact on European visual sensitivity and of ideally communicating with Monet, Van Gogh and the entire impressionist season.
At Palazzo Bonaparte from 27 March to 29 June, the exhibition is called “Hokusai. The great master of Japanese art” and brings together over 200 works from the prestigious collection of the National Museum in Krakow, an institution which, exceptionally, lends its works for the first time in Italy and which chooses Rome to inaugurate the first major monograph on Hokusai outside of Poland. The exhibition itinerary retraces the artist’s entire creative arc, from the works most linked to tradition to the revolutionary series of the “Floating World”.

Alongside the graphic masterpieces, you will find a selection of very rare volumes, precious objects, armour, swords, musical instruments and traditional Japanese costumes, which will accompany the visit, representing the right completion of a story layered between art, daily life and spiritual dimension.
A perhaps unrepeatable event for Rome and Italy – remember that this is the first major exhibition dedicated to the Japanese master held on Italian soil – and a truly unmissable event for art enthusiasts, so don’t waste time and rush to get tickets, you will find all the information in the next paragraph.
