The knot trick for cleaning radiators: it only takes a few seconds to eliminate hidden dust

The cold weather arrives, the radiators are turned on and… that characteristic smell of burnt dust spreads throughout the house. Everyone knows it, yet few take action before it happens. Yet very little would be enough: cleaning the radiators before putting them back into operation is one of those simple gestures that make a huge difference, not only for comfort, but also for the quality of the air we breathe every day.

Radiators left unused for months become real deposits of dust, mites and allergens. When you turn on the heating, all this is vaporized into the air, with consequences that can be annoying especially for those suffering from allergies or asthma. Recent studies on indoor air quality confirm that the particulate matter released by dirty radiators can contribute significantly to domestic pollution, which is often underestimated compared to outdoor pollution.

Cleaning them also improves the energy efficiency of the system: a radiator clogged with dust has more difficulty heating, with a direct impact on consumption in the bill.

The knot trick: how it works and why it’s so effective

Among the various methods for cleaning radiators, the knot method is perhaps the simplest and most ingenious. There is no need for water, no need to dismantle anything, and it reaches the internal spaces between the elements of the radiator where no normal cloth can reach.

Here’s how to do it: take an electrostatic dust-attracting cloth and tie a knot in one of the corners. Insert the cloth into the gap between two elements of the radiator, holding it by the knot (which remains outside, towards you), and slide it along the entire length of the radiator. When it comes out the other side, it will have captured all the accumulated dust quickly and effortlessly. The knot serves precisely to give grip and guide the cloth without it becoming wedged between the slats.

Don’t have an electrostatic cloth? No problem: you can use a microfiber sock or tights — even old and frayed ones, perfect for recycling this way. The microfibre has the same ability to trap dust, and the elongated shape of the sock fits perfectly into the narrow spaces between the radiator elements.

Other useful (and natural) methods for cleaning radiators

The knot trick is great for internal cleaning, but for a complete result you can combine it with other methods:

The advice is to repeat this cleaning at least twice a year: before turning on the heating in autumn and after turning it off in spring. A small maintenance gesture that protects health, prolongs the life of the system and keeps consumption under control.
