There largest supermoon of 2025 will light up the sky on Wednesday 5 November. This phenomenon occurs when the Full moon coincides with the point of maximum proximity of our satellite to the Earth, i.e. the perigee. Since its orbit is not perfectly circular but slightly elliptical, at certain times of the year the Moon is closer to our planet, appearing larger and brighter than usual.
When the Full moon lies within 10% of its closest point to Earth, we speak of supermoon. The shorter distance makes it appear approximately 8% larger and 16% brighter compared to a normal full Moon.
How to observe the November supermoon
Next November 5the Moon will be located at less than 357,000 kilometers from Earththe minimum distance of the year. It will therefore be the largest and most spectacular supermoon of 2025offering breathtaking scenery to those lucky enough to observe it.
The show will begin at sunset, when the lunar disk rises in the east around 15:52 GMT (4.52pm Italian time), just as the sky will begin to take on the shades of twilight. In this phase the Moon will seem even more imposing due to the so-called lunar illusionan optical effect that makes it appear larger on the horizon because our brain compares it with surrounding terrestrial objects.
As the supermoon will rise into the sky, its apparent size will seem to reduce, even if in reality it will not change at all. It is only our perception that changes: without visual reference points, the Moon appears smaller to us when it is high in the sky. However, his intense brightness and sharpness of details visible even to the naked eye they will make the show unforgettable.
To best enjoy the event, it is advisable to go to a place free of light pollution, such as a hill or a beach, and observe the Moon with binoculars or, better yet, with a telescope, to admire craters and lunar seas in all their splendor.
