For the first time in Italy a stadium will bear the name of women: Lodi’s “Dossenina” will be dedicated to the Boccalini sisters, the founders of the first women’s football team in our country
The historian “Dossenina” stadium of Lodi will soon change its name to pay homage to a piece of history of the Italian women’s football. The plant, inaugurated in 1920 and the current Fanful Calcio house, will be dedicated to Boccalini sisters, the founders of the first women’s football team in Italyactivates in the 1930s despite the rigid restrictions imposed by the fascist regime.
The story of the Boccalini sisters, rediscovered only recently, began in 1933 when Giovanna Boccalini, future partisan and councilor in Milan, decided to form a team of women aloneinvolving the sisters Marta, Rosetta and Luisa.
Their project, the Female football group (GFC), managed to obtain permission to take the field, but with rules imposed by the authorities of the time: the players had to wear Skirts instead of shortsbut only razor and the doorman it had to be a man.
It will be the first stage in Italy named after women
The initiative of the Boccalini sisters, considered revolutionary in a period in which sport was exclusively male prerogative, came soon opposed by the regime Which in 1933 prohibited the historic match between the GFC and the Alexandria team. That match never played, but the determination of the athletes still left a mark in the history of Italian women’s sport.
Today, more than 90 years later, the city of Lodi has decided to make them homage officially. The proposal to name the stadium to the Boccalini sisters was carried out by the city councilor Federica Colizzi and Gianfranca Santantonio and obtained the green light from the toponymy commission of the Municipality. The last step before the officer will be The approval of the Council resolution.
The initiative is accompanied by a celebratory project which will involve the Lodigiana community, with an inauguration public event and the tournament dedicated to the Boccalini sisters, established in 2023 to commemorate the game never played. There was no lack of controversy, especially among the fans most linked to the name “Dossenina” and among those who claim that a restoration intervention of the site was more urgent, but the choice represents a historical step: it will be The first stage in Italy to bear the name of women who have changed football.
The title of the stadium is part of a wider path of recognition of the pioneer of women’s sport. Already in 2021 Milan dedicated a street of the Sempione Parco al Female football grouprecognizing the symbolic and sporting value of their business.
