Middle Earth is preparing to experience a new adventure. Warner Bros. has announced the next film in the saga, currently titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Pastwritten by Stephen Colbert with his son Peter McGee. The project will begin immediately upon completion of The Hunt for Gollum and promises to bring the Hobbits back to the center of the narrative, with one eye on nostalgia and another on the discovery of secrets that have remained hidden for years.
The news was disclosed with a video by Peter Jackson, who also shared updates on the next one The Hunt for Gollum. Colbert, present in the video, explained that he had always been fascinated by the initial chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring never adapted into the 2001 films, imagining them as an independent story but coherent with the already built cinematic universe.

The Hobbits return as protagonists
The plot takes place 14 years after the disappearance of Frodo: Sam, Merry and Pippin embark on a journey to retrace the first steps of their adventure, while Elanor, Sam’s daughter, discovers a hidden secret that could rewrite the perception of the War of the Ring. This approach allows us to explore the consequences of the conflict on the Hobbits remaining in the Shire, delving into their legacy and the changes in Middle Earth after the fall of Sauron.
The film will also focus on episodes of the original trilogy never shown on the big screen, such as the events in the Barrow-downs, and will include fan-favorite characters such as Tom Bombadil, who have until now been absent from the cinema films.
A new approach to the saga
The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past represents the first cinematic blockbuster developed by Colbert, but not his first experience in Middle-earth: he had already participated in The Hobbit – The Desolation of Smaug with a small role and directed the short film Darrylgorn.
The project aims for a delicate balance: remaining faithful to both Tolkien’s books and Jackson’s cinematic imagery, while offering a new, more intimate perspective focused on the Hobbits and side stories. After decades of trilogies and spin-offs, Middle-earth prepares for a surprising expansion, promising to reveal the secrets and emotions behind the legend of the War of the Ring.
