The magical ritual of the courtship of the flamingos is back: watch how they dance in unison

In the landscapes of the Chilean plateau, among the savory lakes and high altitudes, one of the most fascinating shows of the season began: the return of the flamingos. Their appearance in the wetlands of Machuca, in the Antofagasta region, marks the beginning of a life cycle that attracts tourists, biologists and local communities.

The ritual of courtship

Visitors who are lucky enough to attend this event can observe the complex wedding procession of the flamingos. Dozens of individuals move in unison, creating real synchronized choreography. These collective dances are combined with vocalizations and a constant sharpening of the plumage, which becomes increasingly bright and intense during the reproductive season.

A sign of health and vitality

The bright pink color is not just a show: it represents a biological indicator. The females, in fact, choose males with the most brilliant nuances, index of good health and genetic strength. This makes the ritual not only beautiful to see, but also fundamental for the future of populations.

The three protagonists

Three species coexist in the Chilean plateau: the Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus Chilensis), the most widespread; The Andean flamingo (Phoenicoparrus Andinus), characterized by white plumage with pink touches; And the smallest, James’ flamenco (Phoenicoparrus Jamesi), also known as Parina Chica. Everyone depends on Altoandini ecosystems, now threatened by climate change and extractive activities.

A phenomenon that unites the Andine countries

The return of flamencos is not only local: these species make seasonal migrations that connect Chile, Bolivia, Argentina and Peru, remembering that nature knows no geographical or political boundaries. Local communities see in this event not only a landscape gift, but also a proof of the ecological resilience of the region.

A message for the future

The fact that the first flocks have chosen Machuca again is a positive sign: the habitats still maintain favorable conditions. However, their presence is also an alarm bell on the need to protect these fragile high altitude ecosystems. Safeguarding the flamingos means, after all, defending the biodiversity and the natural heritage of the Andes.
