The special service that connects Sulmona to the mountain villages of Abruzzo via one of the most spectacular railway routes in the country is back in operation. The initiative of the Ferrovia dei Parchi includes trips on weekends from 22 November to 21 December, with two daily departures at 9:00 and 11:21, and a continuation during the Christmas period from 26 December to 6 January.
Two itineraries for two seasons
The programming is based on the holiday calendar. Until December 21st the convoy ends its run in Roccaraso, crossing Campo di Giove. From Boxing Day onwards, the route extends to Castel di Sangro, expanding the possibilities for exploring the Abruzzo mountain area during the holidays.
The route winds through the Apennine ridge, overcoming significant differences in height and offering views of valleys, woods and perched towns. The vintage carriages pass through tunnels dug into the rock and suspended viaducts, while the landscape alternates between wooded stretches and snow-covered expanses of the higher plateaus. The intermediate stops coincide with historic villages which during the Christmas period set up markets, nativity scenes and folkloristic initiatives, creating a direct connection between the dimension of the journey and that of territorial discovery.
Integrated tickets and packages
Booking takes place exclusively online via the ferrodeiparchi.it portal. The standard fare is set at 55 euros for adults and 35 euros for minors between 4 and 12 years old, while children under four years old travel free without an assigned seat. The platform requires that the number of adults in the booking is at least equal to that of minors.
The offer is completed with tourist solutions that combine the historic train journey with overnight stays at affiliated facilities located in Sulmona, Caramanico, Rivisondoli, Campo di Giove and Scanno. A format that allows you to structure more complex stays in the area, going beyond the simple day trip.
A route that redefines railway tourism
The success of the initiative, which every year attracts tens of thousands of visitors from abroad, demonstrates how the recovery of historic railway infrastructures can be transformed into a concrete tourist resource. The model proposed by the Ferrovia dei Parchi overturns the logic of rapid transport: here the time spent becomes added value, and the route counts as much as the final destination.
