The Motta panettone signed by starred chef Bruno Barbieri it is undoubtedly one of the most advertised and talked about this Christmas 2024, but is it really worth how much it costs? Altroconsumo put it to the test in a comparative test on a total of 12 panettone and the result was a bit surprising, especially considering the fame and high expectations generated by the collaboration with a chef such as Barbieri.
Despite the prestigious signature, in fact, the Motta di Barbieri panettone did not place at the top of the quality ranking. Let’s find out how it was judged by experts and consumers.
The panettone test
The 12 panettoni in the competition were tasted by over 150 consumers in various Italian cities, from Bologna to Cosenza, and evaluated by a jury of expert pastry chefs.
Although pastry chefs appreciated some aspects of Barbieri’s Motta panettone, overall ratings were much lower among consumers. Appearance, smell, flavor and consistency were not convincing, with opinions that did not go beyond satisfactory. Compared to last year’s panettone, signed by the same brand, the 2024 product did not show significant improvements.
However, Barbieri’s Motta panettone presents some differences compared to the 2023 one. The quantity of eggs has doubled, but the quantity of butter is similar, while the fruit has decreased by 10%. Despite these changes, the product still complies with the regulations required for the preparation of this Christmas dessert.
The price is high, but is it really worth it?
With an average price of 15.18 eurosBarbieri’s panettone is the most expensive in the test, well more than double compared to last year’s Motta panettone, which cost on average only 6.36 euros.
But is it worth spending so much on a panettone that, in terms of quality, doesn’t differ much from the previous one? The answer, according to the test, is no: there are panettone with superior quality at a decidedly lower price.
The Motta panettone signed Barbieri only stops in sixth place in the ranking, which takes into account both laboratory analyzes and taste tests. Good, then, but not great, and considering the price, the game doesn’t seem worth the candle.
