A recent study from the University of Tor Vergata examined the effects of a Mediterranean diet composed exclusively of organic foods on the intestinal microbiota. The results showed a 25% increase in “good” bacteria in the microbiota and a decrease of up to 50% in pro-oxidant bacteriaresponsible for inflammation and health risks.

The study

The researchers discovered, through a large set of data collected during the study on a group of volunteers, that the adoption of a Organic diet can bring significant health benefits. These positive effects are particularly evident when the diet is based on healthy foods, such as legumes, vegetables, olive oil, fresh and dried fruit, and includes a limited consumption of animal proteins, preferably from fish.

A key element that emerged from the study concerns the quality of fats present in organic foods used in the Mediterranean diet. Cardiocirculatory risk indicators, such as atherogenicity and thrombogenicity, were found to be more than halved compared to the values ​​recorded before the research.

Furthermore, the antioxidant capacity of the diet increased significantly, going from 5,870 to 20,573 Orac units, a crucial figure for fighting thecellular aging. The results of the study, part of the Imod protocol (Italian Mediterranean Organic Diet) of the University of Tor Vergata, are at the center of the awareness campaign “The Organic within us”, promoted by FederBio, AssoBio and Consorzio Il Biologico.

This improvement in the composition of the intestinal microbiota translates into a significant reduction of the risks of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and tumorsthanks to the immunomodulatory and detoxifying effects of the diet.

Furthermore, the study highlighted environmental benefits associated with consuming organic foods, such as a decrease in the water and carbon footprint of the diet.

These findings highlight the importance of an organic Mediterranean diet for gut and overall health, as well as environmental sustainability.
