Chance enters human history long before cities, palaces and kingdoms. It enters hands accustomed to hunting, moving, surviving. A new study published in American Antiquities places the oldest dice known today among 12,800 and 12,200 years agoat the end of the last glaciation, in sites of the Folsom culture between Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. The date changes the perspective quite a bit: those finds are older than that 6,000 years the oldest dice yet attributed to Old World societies.
For historians of mathematics, dice games mark one of the first structured forms of relationship with randomness. First comes the gesture, the rule, the expectation of the result. Only much later do the theory, the written numbers, the formulas arrive. In this history, the native populations of North America now occupy a central place: the new work argues that in the Americas random outcomes were experienced in repeatable and regulated forms when in the Old World that chronology was still much later.
Those dice, moreover, bore little resemblance to the idea we have today. They were double-sided dicethe so-called binary lots: Small flat or slightly rounded pieces of bone, often oval or rectangular, small enough to fit in the palm of the hand and be thrown in groups. A face was made recognizable with markings, surface treatments or coloring; that was the face “that mattered”. With each throw the result depended on how many of those faces ended up. Simple to see, very clear to use, perfect for transforming uncertainty into a shared rule.
When gaming stops feeling like a pastime
The strongest part of the study also lies in the method. Researcher Robert J. Madden built a morphological test starting from 293 time series of indigenous dice documented at the beginning of the twentieth century. Then he picked up finds that had already been excavated, photographed, catalogued, often left for decades under vague labels such as “possible game pieces”. Applying that criterion to the archaeological record he identified over 600 diagnostic or probable specimensdistributed in 57 sites of an area that today touches 12 US states and goes through major phases of North American prehistory. Basically, the track had been there for a while. M lacked a serious way to recognize it all at once.
The result is significant for a further reason. These objects suggest that gambling, or in any case the game entrusted to chance, functioned as a social technology. It created a regulated space, readable by different groups, useful for meeting, exchanging goods and information, forming alliances, managing uncertainty and coexistence. Inside that mechanism there was already a concrete familiarity with probabilistic regularities that we today associate with much later concepts, including the law of large numbers. Nobody talks about formal theory in the middle of the Pleistocene. We talk about practice, observation, repetition, collective intelligence. And that’s already a lot.
This is why the discovery goes beyond the “first dice in history” effect. It tells of a humanity that very early on had already understood one essential thing: there are events that escape direct control, and for this very reason they can be channeled into shared rules, scores, rituals. Before casinos, before empires, before six-sided dice, there was already someone who left part of the world to chance. All it took was a few bones and a steady hand.
