The patent has been filed for the automatic bike pedal: it is electric and regulates itself

According to reports from Neozone, Shimano – one of the world leaders in the cycling industry – has filed a new patent for self-adjusting electronic pedalsnumber US12059058B2. This cutting-edge system promises to revolutionize the cycling experience, automatically adapting to the position of the cyclist’s foot in real time.

The heart of this innovation lies in one electronic cleatfixed under the cyclist’s shoe, which communicates wirelessly with the pedals. When the cyclist presses on the pedal, the sensors integrated in the cleat detect the movement and send signals to the system, which adjusts the inclination of the pedal optimally, both lateral and forward-backward.

This system allows the shoe to move automatically along tracks to ensure a perfect position, thus improving comfort and performance. The idea behind this patent is to solve one of the most common problems among cyclists: the correct position of the foot on the pedal, which can vary depending on the conditions of the terrain and the slopes faced.

There are two versions: one for mountain bikes and one for racing bikes

Automatic adjustment of the pedals, based on data collected from body and bicycle sensors, could prevent pain and crampsoptimizing the cyclist’s posture and strength while pedaling. Furthermore, manual adjustment remains an option for those who prefer more direct control, especially on long, flat routes.

Shimano has developed two versions of these electronic cleats: one for mountain bike, based on the SPD system with double-sided pedals, e one for racing bikesinspired by the Look Kea model, which offers a greater contact surface and a higher degree of retention. In both cases the main battery that powers the system is integrated into the pedalwhile the wireless connection powers the cleat and regulator.

Although this innovation is still in development, the potential impact on cyclists is enormous. Self-adjusting electronic pedals could become a game changer, dramatically improving safety, comfort and efficiency, dynamically adapting to the rider’s needs in every situation.
