The police shoot in hares and nourishes in the middle of the night in a Milanese park: citizens in revolt against the “containment plan”

On the night of August 22, the residents of San Giuliano Milanese were awakened by the echo of shots from the Park of the Giants who fueled a climate of pure terror. But the motivations of these firearms were created even more in the bewilderment.

It does not work of criminals or thieves, but a real “hunting joke” against hares and nutrie. The provincial police, at the disposal of the mayor Marco Segala, has in fact knocked down the animals following a scheduled operation arranged to contain nucries and hares considered in a supernumero.

Everything happened in a gruesome way and without adequate notice given that communication on social media has come practically simultaneously with the beginning of the operation, arousing indignation among the citizens. The intervention also raised questions about the real need to resort to rifles – moreover in a public area frequented by families and children – instead of thinking about a better and less bloody and lethal solution.

According to the authorities, the intervention was aimed at containing invasive species, but as mentioned many inhabitants they pointed out how the choice of mode and timing was inappropriate. The social networks recorded a wave of criticism. Many comments that have denounced the lack of common sense and the presence of much more serious problems than hares and nutrie.

The official posts of the Municipality and the mayor on their accounts have not applauded indignation, confirming a questionable management of information to citizens. If it is true that the area was closed to the public, the presence of shots so close to homes remains dangerous and unjustified. The action, although inserted in the regional plan, appears disproportionate to real risks.

Containment yes, but with common sense

But what are the foundations for such an operation? The measure is part of the regional plan provided for by the regional law 7 October 2002 n. 20, updated over time, which identifies the invasive species to be controlled and establishes the methods of intervention.

In Lombardy, nutrie is often subject to containing due to damage to agriculture and local ecosystem. Operations of this type are common and conducted to protect environmental stability and public safety. However, this containment certainly does not force to use traumatic and invasive methods, without considering the impact on the community.

And certainly shooting in a public park does not seem a safe measure, with the protection of trees or the prevention of agricultural damage that do not justify the idea of ​​transforming a green area into a place of terror. Shoot in the silence of the night and kill poor defenseless animals does not educate, does not protect and leaves a sense of misunderstanding and distrust towards the institutions.
