Daniela Gazzano was awarded the title of Officer of Merit of the Italian Republic. An honor that rewards not only a personal history of resistance, but also a cultural and civil commitment built over time, despite extreme physical condition. For twenty years Daniela has lived with Locked-In Syndrome, a neurological syndrome that makes her completely paralyzed, while maintaining clarity and awareness intact.
A life suspended, but fully present
Originally from Albenga, raised in Calizzano and resident in Bra, Daniela was a nursery school teacher. In 2005, immediately after the birth of her second daughter, she suffered a serious cerebral hemorrhage that led to a coma. Upon awakening, for a long time, she was considered to be in a vegetative state, until the doctors recognized the real diagnosis: Daniela was conscious, but a prisoner of her own body. From here began a long journey of rehabilitation and return to life, albeit in a different form.
Communicating with a heartbeat: a silent revolution
The only muscle Daniela can move is one eyelid. Thanks to the intuition of her husband Luigi Ferraro, a visual alphabet was created that allows her to communicate through the blinks of her eyelashes. A slow, tiring, but effective system, which gave Daniela a voice back. A voice that, over the years, has not been limited to the private sphere, but has also found space in writing and social commitment.
His solidarity commitment
In 2018 Daniela wrote the children’s book The magical stories of the enchanted clearingdictated with over one hundred thousand blinks. A work that represented one of the central reasons for the honor received, together with the birth of the association Gli Amici di Daniela APS, founded to support families living with very serious disabilities. Among the most significant projects, the creation of accessible structures such as Casa D Mare and the future project of a Casa D Montagna.
The profound meaning of the honor
The title of Officer of Merit of the Italian Republic recognizes two fundamental dimensions of Daniela’s path: the cultural one, linked to writing in extreme conditions, and the philanthropic one, built through years of concrete commitment. A recognition that affirms an essential principle: the dignity and value of a person do not depend on the body they inhabit, but on the presence they manage to leave in the world.
