The unexpected friendship born between high school students and the elderly people of a retirement home thanks to sitting volleyball

In Belton, Texas, sitting volleyball games are transforming everyday life into an experience of shared joy. At Woodland Cottages, the residents of the retirement home, known as The Hit Squad, have begun to challenge members of the Lake Belton High School girls volleyball team, resulting in matches full of laughter and friendly competition.

The simple dynamics of playing on chairs has ignited a contagious enthusiasm, creating an environment where generations meet without barriers. Each match becomes a celebration of energy, sportsmanship and human connection, involving both seniors and teenagers.

Friendships that go beyond the pitch

But the bond formed between the two groups isn’t limited to games: Residents attended a recent high school team game, cheering from the stands and surprising eight seniors with bags of personalized swag during the “Senior Night” celebration. On the other hand, the students reciprocated the enthusiasm, often visiting the community to build solid and sincere friendships, also creating a positive impact on families and staff of the facility.

Interest in the senior community grew rapidly, attracting more students eager to participate in activities. Even the previously undefeated Lady Broncos women’s basketball team asked to organize a sitting volleyball game with the residents. Meetings that created a real bridge between generations and enriched all participants.

Tangible benefits for everyone

According to a spokesperson for Woodland Cottages, residents have reported an increase in physical activity, greater social participation and a renewed sense of purpose. Chair games have become more than just a game: they represent an opportunity for personal growth, fun and human connection, showing that sport can unite different generations with lightness and passion.
