Sirmione is one of the most loved spa destinations on Lake Garda, and perhaps in all of Italy. Yet, few people know that there is no need to book a luxury establishment or spend large amounts of money to enjoy hot water. A stone’s throw from the famous Lido delle Bionde beach, a source of sulphurous water flows directly into the lake, creating a small natural pool that is completely free and open to all. An open-air secret, frequented by those who know the peninsula well, which is worth discovering.
The Lido delle Bionde and Jamaica Beach
Lido delle Bionde is perhaps the most famous beach in Sirmione: a cozy and bright cove, nestled between the Villa Cortine Park and the imposing Grotte di Catullo, the Roman villa that overlooks the entire peninsula from above. The water is crystal clear, an emerald green that at certain moments of the day – especially in the morning, with the grazing light – almost makes you forget you are not at the seaside.
The beach is free and has free showers. For those who want a little more comfort, nearby there are bars, restaurants, paid toilets and sunbeds for rent: everything you need for a relaxing day without having to organize anything in advance.
Along the route that leads to the thermal pool, past the Lido delle Bionde, you also come across Jamaica Beach: a suggestive and wild stretch of coast, made up of large slabs of limestone smoothed over time by water and wind. There is no sand or gravel, just flat rock and the lake that stretches out in front of us in all its silence. It is a visual spectacle that is difficult to forget, but not suitable for little ones: the surface can be slippery, entry into the water is not comfortable and the seabed deteriorates rapidly. Jamaica Beach can be reached — and enjoyed safely — only when the lake level is low enough, usually between late summer and fall.
Thermal water: where it is and how it works
The hot water pool is located in the exact point where the natural spring flows into the lake, progressively mixing with the fresh water. The result is a pleasant temperature, warm but not excessive, which varies according to the season and the water level. It is not an equipped pool or an organized structure: it is simply a corner of nature where the earth gives something precious to the lake.
The free spa area extends along the coast between Punta Grò and Lido delle Bionde, where there are several points where hot water emerges directly into the lake. It is an authentic, slightly wild experience that combines thermal pleasure with the beauty of the Garda landscape. On cooler days, the contrast between the warm water of the spring and the cooler water of the lake adds a hint of thrill to the experience.
Being completely free and outdoors, the pool is very popular during the summer, especially on weekends. To find a comfortable seat, it is advisable to arrive early in the morning — and bring a good degree of patience. Those who show up late or on a Sunday in August may find the area already crowded.
The Boiola spring
The thermal water of Sirmione is not just any water. It is classified as a salsobromoiodine sulfur and is recognized for its beneficial properties on the respiratory tract, joints and skin. Its underground path is extraordinary: it flows from the Boiola spring, fed by the Monte Baldo reservoir. It originates at over 800 meters above sea level, descends to more than 2,100 meters below lake level, is enriched with mineral salts along the entire journey and re-emerges on the surface with a temperature of around 69°C – lowered by the encounter with the lake water before being accessible to bathers.
It is this mineral richness that makes the Sirmione spa famous throughout Europe, and the same water that feeds the large spa facilities of the peninsula – above all, the Aquaria Thermal Spa – is the one that emerges for free between the rocks of the lake, available to anyone who simply wants to immerse themselves.
How to get to the thermal pool
The area can be reached on foot from the historic center of Sirmione in about 15–20 minutes, following the lakefront in a north-west direction towards Lido delle Bionde. Once past the beach, continue on the coastal path until you find the thermal outcrops.
Those arriving by car can park in the parking areas near the entrance to the peninsula (Sirmione has limited traffic, so the car parks are located outside the centre) and continue on foot. Alternatively, from the boat stop on the lake it is possible to reach the spa area in a few minutes on foot, making arrival by water a convenient and scenic option.
