Sofia continues to be the favorite female name for Italian parents, but the 2025 ranking reserves some changes. Ginevra confirms herself on the podium, Beatrice gains ground, Giulia drops one position and Camilla wins a place among the ten most chosen names. The new Istat data show an Italy that is still very fond of classic names, with some surprises.
Choosing a baby girl’s name is one of the first important decisions for future parents. There are those who rely on family tradition, those who look for a name with a particular meaning and those who prefer something original, but not too unusual. Yet, observing the preferences of Italian families, a rather clear trend emerges: traditional names continue to dominate.
Let’s see which are the most chosen female names in Italy in 2025 and what has changed compared to the previous year.
The ranking of the 10 most chosen female names in 2025
According to Istat data, these are the ten female names most chosen by Italian parents in 2025:
- Sofia – 4,389 girls (2.54%)

- Geneva – 3,686 girls (2.13%)
- Vittoria – 3,626 girls (2.10%)
- Beatrice – 3,325 girls (1.93%)
- Giulia – 3,074 girls (1.78%)
- Matilde – 3,006 girls (1.74%)
- Ludovica – 3,001 girls (1.74%)
- Alice – 2,745 girls (1.59%)
- Camilla – 2,407 girls (1.39%)
Sofia is still the most loved female name in Italy
Sofia’s popularity doesn’t seem to be experiencing any crisis. With 4,389 newborns, this name remains in first place in the national ranking. Of Greek origin, it means “wisdom” and is appreciated for its simplicity, elegant sound and the ease with which it is pronounced even abroad.
Immediately behind we find Aurora, chosen for 3,956 girls. The name recalls the light of dawn and, in Roman mythology, the goddess who announced the rising of the sun. A meaning that continues to conquer Italian families.
Geneva is confirmed on the third step of the podium, with 3,686 newborns. Also linked to the medieval legends of King Arthur, this name has consolidated its presence among the favorites in recent years.
Completing the top five positions are Vittoria, chosen for 3,626 girls, and Beatrice, with 3,325. Two names with a strong link with tradition: the first recalls success, while the second is associated with happiness and also made famous by the figure of Beatrice in Dante’s poetry.
Giulia loses one position, while Camilla enters the top 10
The comparison with 2024 shows interesting changes, even if the top four positions remain stable.
Giulia drops from fifth to sixth place, overtaken by Beatrice, who thus gains a position in the national ranking. It is certainly not a forgotten name: with 3,074 girls, Giulia continues to be one of the most popular choices, but no longer occupies the very top positions.
Another change concerns Matilde, who goes from tenth to seventh position. Of Germanic origin, the name means “strong in battle” and seems to increasingly find favor with parents.
Ludovica remains among the most chosen names, while Alice drops from seventh to ninth position.
The most obvious news, however, concerns Camilla, who enters the top 10 in tenth place, with 2,407 newborns. Making room for her is Emma, present among the top ten names in 2024 but absent in the new ranking.
What do the most popular female names mean?
Behind the most popular names there are stories, meanings and cultural references that span the centuries.
Sofia, as we have seen, means “wisdom”, while Aurora recalls the beginning of a new day. Vittoria is linked to the idea of success and Beatrice to happiness.
Ginevra recalls the imagery of Arthurian legends, while Giulia derives from the ancient Roman name Iulius. Matilde and Ludovica both have Germanic origins and meanings related to strength and fighting.
Alice, also of Germanic origin, is associated with nobility and became famous in literature thanks to the character Alice in Wonderland. Finally, Camilla is a Latin name that also appears in Virgil’s Aeneid, where it identifies a young warrior.
The 2025 ranking therefore confirms a preference for names that combine a long history with a still current sound.
How to choose the right name for a little girl?
Following the rankings can be a good starting point, especially for those looking for ideas, but the choice of a name remains deeply personal.
Some parents prefer short, easily pronounceable names, others are looking for something that has a special meaning or that recalls a loved one. Then there are those who want a name that is not very common, to avoid their daughter finding herself in class with other girls who have the same name.
An aspect not to be underestimated is the combination with the surname. Pronouncing your name and surname together can help you understand if the sound is harmonious. It is also worth considering any diminutives and nicknames, as well as imagining how that name will accompany the child even as an adult.
There is, of course, no perfect name for everyone. The best choice is the one that reflects the family’s tastes and desires.
