In Chennai, India, the initiative Koodugal Trust is transforming schools and communities into safe havens for sparrowscombining environmental education and conservation. Founded by Ganeshan Da mechanical engineer with a deep connection to nature, the project aims to increase the population of these birds, which are essential for ecological balance.
Ganeshan, who grew up in a village near Bangalore, has always had a passion for the environment. During his university years, he began working on initiatives tree planting and water conservationlaying the foundation for the future Koodugal Nest, officially recorded in 2020 with the support of his wife Shanthini. Together, they have made the NGO capable of raising awareness among students and communities about the importance of sparrows.
The project’s mission is twofold: to protect sparrows and teach the importance of biodiversity. Through the construction of nest boxesdistributed in schools and communities, Koodugal creates shelters that compensate for habitat loss caused by urbanization. The boxes are assembled directly by the students, an activity that not only reduces costs, but strengthens practical commitment and raises young people’s awareness of nature.

The project received prestigious awards
And the effects are remarkable. Since 2020, the team has delivered beyond 20,000 nest boxesregistering a 15% increase in the sparrow population in some areas of Chennai. The presence of these birds contributes to the natural control of parasites and promotes the dispersal of seeds, key elements for the health of ecosystems. Additionally, sparrow sanctuaries created in schools provide protected spaces where birds can thrive.
Convincing communities of the importance of protecting sparrows has not been easy. However, thanks to the dedication of the team and the support of corporate partners, such as the Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation, Koodugal was able to overcome the initial difficulties.
The project has received prestigious awards, including the Tamil Nadu Leadership Award in 2023 and theInspiro Award in 2024. And for the future, Koodugal’s goal is ambitious: reach one million families in the next ten years.
