In the heart of the Thar desert, in northern India, a few kilometers from Jaisalmer, in Rajasthan, stands the Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls School, a building that combines sustainable design, local culture and female empowerment. Designed by the New York study Diana Kellogg Architects, the school is part of the wider Gyaan Center, an initiative that aims to create educational and community spaces for women in the region.
It welcomes over 400 girls from families under the poverty threshold for free, offering them the opportunity of an otherwise denied education. But it is not just a place of learning: it is a living laboratory of sustainable architecture and community participation.
An oval architecture in sandstone
The building affects for its elliptical form, a choice that has not only aesthetic value. The architect wanted to symbolically recall the idea of infinite and femininity, but also the curved geometries typical of the fortified architectures of Rajasthan.
The school is built in local yellow sandstone, resistant material with extreme heat and hand -sculpted by craftsmen in the area. In this way, work has been guaranteed to the local communities and a link with the construction traditions of the territory has been maintained. The school uniforms also follow this logic: they were designed by the Indian stylist Sabyasachi Mukherjee, with traditional textile motifs such as Ajrakh, a symbol of cultural pride.
Passive strategies, collection of water and solar panels
The area where the building stands is among the hottest and most arid on the planet, with temperatures exceeding 45 ° C. For this reason, the school integrates different solutions of bioclimatic architecture:
These solutions do not completely eliminate the challenges related to extreme heat, but significantly reduce the use of mechanical cooling systems, guaranteeing a more sustainable approach.
A school that becomes an international model of sustainability and fairness
The Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls School is not limited to offering a free education: it represents a global model of ethical architecture, awarded in 2023 with the Aia Architecture Award. The project actively involved the local community, strengthening the sense of belonging and creating a direct link between families, craftsmen and new generations.
Today the school is considered a concrete example of how it is possible to combine climatic justice, social inclusion and cultural enhancement. Not a utopia, but a real project that shows how the future of the girls and the planet can be built together, also starting from a remote place like the Thar desert.
