A Hungarian consumer ends up in hospital after drinking a coffee and mushroom supplement. It only takes a few hours for the report to reach the European alert system, and a few days for the Ministry of Health to order the recall in Italy too.
What happened
The case originated in Hungary, where local health authorities recorded the hospitalization of a man after taking the Coffee 2.0 supplement, sold under the Tasty Dose brand. The reported symptoms, persistent vomiting and diarrhea, led to the suspicion of food poisoning, so much so that hospital treatment was necessary. From here, on Friday 11 September, an urgent warning was issued through the RASFF, the rapid alert system for food and feed that connects the health authorities of the European Union countries. The European Commission forwarded the notification to all Member States and, since the product is also marketed online, Italy was no exception and the Ministry of Health published its safety notice in the section dedicated to food recalls.
The product and batch affected
Coffee 2.0 is a powdered dietary supplement that combines coffee, medicinal mushroom extracts, including Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi, Shiitake and Maitake, adaptogenic substances and collagen. It is produced on behalf of Kaching doo, based in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and also marketed in 288 gram packs. The lot subject to the recall is number BI0720602, with an expiration date set at 7/2/2028.
Instructions for those who purchased it
The product has already been withdrawn from the shelves, although the Ministry still recommends, as a precaution, not to consume any packages bearing that batch number. Anyone who still has them will be able to return them to the store where they purchased them, even if the purchase was made online.
