The coffee table in the living room almost always lives the life of a silent servant. He keeps the remote control on, a forgotten cup, the book he started with enthusiasm and abandoned after three evenings, maybe a candle bought to add atmosphere and then left there to make passive furniture. Oasis Aura starts from another idea: taking that very normal piece of furniture, putting sand, light and a metal sphere inside it, and making it become something that moves on its own in front of the sofa.
Under the glass, a small marble slides slowly and draws in the sand. He opens lines, curves, goes back, builds figures, lets them live for a while and then erases them. A kind of automatic Zen garden, with less rake and more apps, designed for those who want a beautiful object to look at at home even when no one is doing anything. Which is something rarer than it seems, in a living room where every screen now demands attention, response, presence, energy.
The project comes from Grounded Labs, already known for Oasis Mini, the small kinetic sand surface that can be controlled by smartphone. With Aura the format grows and becomes a real coffee table, to be placed in the center of the room. The Kickstarter campaign started with an initial goal of 8,595 euros and has exceeded 609 thousand euros raised. A leap that says a lot about the charm of this object: it’s not really necessary, but it makes you want to look at it.
The marble works slowly
The mechanism has something almost childish, in a good way. A motorized metal ball is guided beneath the surface and moves the sand along precise trajectories. From above you can only see the result: clean grooves, emerging shapes, animals, spirals, waves, geometric patterns, small abstract landscapes. The drawing is born slowly, without haste. Then it disappears, because the next step passes through it and transforms it into something else.
The app allows you to choose patterns, adjust the speed, change the lights and create custom designs. There are hundreds of patterns available, with a very simple logic: choose, start, watch. The technology remains under there, hidden enough not to ruin the effect. You see the sand, you see the marble, you see the movement. The rest works behind the scenes.
The round version with RGB backlight pushes the scene more. The light comes from below, passes through the sand, changing the character of the drawing. In an essential living room it can become the center of the room. In a house already full of objects, you risk being a bit too much of a prima donna. You need the right place, because Oasis Aura is not a shy table. Even when he moves slowly, he wants to be watched.
The calm, with the cable
The most interesting thing is the short circuit. Oasis Aura is a connected object, controlled by app, with adjustable lights and internal mechanics. But it uses all this technology to do something almost ancient: move sand. Instead of adding another screen to your day, put a slow, repetitive, physical gesture before your eyes. The ball passes, the groove remains, the figure grows.
Grounded Labs insists a lot on the idea of ​​relaxation, and here it is worth keeping the measure. A coffee table doesn’t cure stress, it doesn’t save the day, it doesn’t transform an ordinary Monday into a spiritual retreat in the Dolomites. However, it can become a visual break. Something to watch as the phone finally goes silent. A small aquarium without fish, a flame without fire, an orderly rain inside the glass.
Operation is presented as almost silent, an important detail for an object intended for the living room, bedroom, study or relaxation corner. If such a table made noise, it would lose half the magic on the first spin of the ball. Here the ambition is different: staying in the room without invading it, changing shape without getting agitated, drawing without demanding applause. The sand does the dirty work, the light does the makeup, the marble takes all the show.
The price remains there
Then the bill arrives, and the charmer sits down on the sofa. The launch price is around 730 euros, with delivery announced for November 2026. Perfect timing for an important Christmas gift, the kind that requires conviction, budget and maybe even a person at home willing to accept a table that draws alone in the sand.
In favor of the project is the company’s declared experience, which claims a large base of customers and previous products already shipped. The usual caution of crowdfunding remains, the one that should be written next to the “support the project” button in nice big letters: Kickstarter is not a shop. A production is financed, with a promise of delivery. In between there are factories, logistics, possible delays, changes, customs, unexpected events.
Oasis Aura lives in that strange zone of objects that do not solve a practical problem and for this very reason must convince on the level of desire. It is design, decoration, domestic kinetic art and also a little living room luxury. Too expensive to be a light purchase, too particular to be dismissed as a gadget.
