We have already placed everything on the windowsill: ficuses that survived our distraction, ferns treated like roommates, orchids observed with the same anxiety with which one checks a file at the INPS. All that was missing was the idea of listening to them. Not in the mystical sense, with the plant improvising a jazz solo between one watering and the next, but almost. PhytoHarmonia Zen it was born precisely from this strange and fascinating area, where the greenery of the house meets sensors, electronics and our old tendency to look for a sign of life even in the ficus in the entrance.
The device was designed by Brahim Ayi and awarded to Concours Lépine International Paris 2026a French showcase dedicated to inventions, with the Prize of the Chambre des Métiers et de l’Artisanat and a bronze medal.
The leaves act as a score
How it works is simple to imagine, at least in the visible part. Small clamps are attached to the leaves, the sensors detect the bioelectrical activity of the plant and the device interprets those signals, transforming them into sound patterns in real time. Light, movement, environment and variations around the plant can change the flow of the melody, creating a kind of domestic soundscape that changes with the room.
Of course, it is necessary interpret. The plant remains a plant, with all its silent dignity. The device takes measurable biological activity and converts it into sound, as happens in many forms of data sonification. Research on plant physiological and electrophysiological signals has been around for some time and uses sensors to record parameters such as bioelectrical potentials, humidity, light, temperature and other environmental data. PhytoHarmonia takes that principle out of the laboratory and places it at home, inside an object designed more for sensorial experience than for pure scientific measurement.
The declared sound selection revolves around soft timbres: piano, harp, flute. No spaceship effect, no gadget aesthetic that seems to have come out of an aggressive home automation catalogue. The declared idea is to build a relaxing atmosphere, useful for concentration, creativity, meditation or simple domestic quiet. In practice: the plant produces variations, the device translates them, the room fills with music that changes without becoming just any playlist hidden in an elegant box.
A different plant, a different sound
The most curious part is its variability. A plant exposed to full light may generate a different response than one placed in a shadier corner. A humid room, a movement near the leaves, a touch, a change in the environment can influence the result. And here the object stops seeming merely decorative. Not because it reveals who knows what vegetal secret from a fantasy novel, rather because it forces us to remember something banal and much forgotten: even what seems still changes.
The device can be used at home, in the office, in a space dedicated to meditation, and the presentation text insists on simple use, without turning the user into a laboratory technician with a fern on his desk. USB-C or rechargeable battery powered, intuitive controls, wooden body, hand assembled in France. All built to look like part of the furniture, closer to a small elegant speaker than a school experiment instrument.
There is also an almost tender aspect, if one manages not to be too ashamed of one’s tender part. Many talk to the plants, move them when they seem to be suffering, get offended if the basil collapses after three days like a tragic actor. In this scenario, listening to a melody generated by their activity sounds less absurd than it seems. We have already filled the house with speakers, smart lamps, apps to breathe better, white noise, sounds of fake rain and playlists called “deep focus” that start while we continue to check the notifications. At least here the excuse has some leaves.
Between technology and a small domestic ritual
PhytoHarmonia moves in a delicate area: it may seem like poetry, it may seem like connected well-being, it may seem like a high-tech whim for those who have already bought three nebulizers and a Himalayan salt lamp. The border is thin. However, the object has its own coherence: it does not promise to translate the thoughts of the plant, it creates a sound experience starting from real signals. The difference is significant, because very little is needed to transform a beautiful invention into badly lit living room junk.
Seen like this, the plant music it becomes a different way of being next to domestic greenery. Less rapid consumption, more observation. Less screen on, more attention to a living organism that changes without making a scene. A plant that receives light, water, shade, air and touch responds in its own way; the device takes those micro-variations and makes them perceptible through sound. Then everyone will decide whether to feel it is a form of relaxation, a curiosity to show to guests or yet another proof of the fact that we need to mediate even silence with a device. The ficus remains on the windowsill. We, for once, lower the volume of the rest.
