When the skin on your hands starts to dry, crack or give that feeling of tension that appears immediately after washing, the cause shouldn’t be looked for only in low temperatures. The hands, by their nature, have a thicker skin structure than other areas of the body, but have fewer sebaceous glands. This makes them less protected and more exposed to dehydration. Water, less delicate detergents, constant temperature changes and repeated washing contribute to weakening the skin barrier, especially in the winter months.
Faced with these problems, the most immediate response remains the use of a hand cream. The market, however, offers an enormous quantity of products, with prices ranging from a few euros to decidedly higher figures. The question therefore becomes inevitable: does spending more really guarantee superior quality? Or is it possible to achieve good results even with a cheap cream?
To clarify, Altroconsumo analyzed eight of the most popular hand creams, selected from pharmacies, supermarkets and perfumeries. The objective was not only to identify the best performing overall, but also to understand which product offers the best balance between effectiveness and cost, a decisive aspect for those looking for an accessible daily solution.
A rigorous test, encouraging results
The tests conducted by the consumer association returned an overall positive picture. All the creams examined proved to be safe and capable of carrying out their main task: moisturizing and protecting the skin of the hands. Most received good reviews, while only two products achieved a sufficient rating.
An important fact also concerns the composition: none of the formulas analyzed contains substances considered problematic in the cosmetic field, such as potential endocrine disruptors.
Altroconsumo also highlights an often underestimated aspect: the effectiveness of a cream depends largely on its consistency in use. Applying it every day, at least in the morning and evening, has more impact than any promise printed on the label.
The best buy: good quality, minimum price
If the top of the overall ranking is occupied by a higher-end product, the verdict changes radically when you look at the relationship between quality and price. What stands out in this area is Glicemille – Nourishing Hand Cream, which wins the recognition of best purchase. The product obtains a score of 70/100, accompanied by a quality judged to be good.
The most striking figure remains the cost: 2.39 euros average price, equal to 23.39 euros per litre, a figure significantly lower than many competitors. It is an essential cream, without frills, which focuses on a functional and concrete formula. The result demonstrates that taking care of your hands does not require high investments and that even an economical product, easily available in the supermarket, can guarantee adequate protection and hydration.
The other creams in the ranking
In the overall comparison, first place as “Best of the test” goes to Bottega Verde – Peony & Hyaluronic Acid Hand Cream, which reaches 84/100 thanks to a high hydrating efficacy and a good ability to protect the skin barrier. However, the average price, around 14 euros, and the very high cost per liter place it in a less accessible range.
Below is the complete ranking of the hand creams analyzed, from highest to lowest score:
Perfumes, sensitive skin and attention to the environment
Another element that emerged from the analysis concerns the presence of potentially allergenic perfumes or fragrances. Almost all the creams tested contain it, with the exception of Rilastil Xerolact, an important detail for those who suffer from skin sensitivity or prefer neutral products.
Altroconsumo also assessed the environmental impact, assigning penalties to complex or unsustainable packaging. The results show a clear trend: simple formulas and essential packaging work better than aggressive marketing strategies, both from a practical and environmental point of view.
How the test was carried out
The test involved eight hand creams belonging to different price ranges. The products underwent double-blind laboratory tests, lasting two weeks, on twenty women for each cream, with application twice a day. Hydration was measured by corneometer, while the ability to protect the skin barrier was assessed with the tewameter.
At the same time, ordinary consumers have used the creams in daily life, expressing opinions on consistency, scent, absorption and ease of application. The final score also takes into account the environmental impact of the packaging and the correctness of the information on the label, with greater weight attributed to the hydrating and protective efficacy, which accounts for 60% of the overall result.
In light of the data collected, the message appears clear: for those looking for an effective, accessible and easily available hand cream, Glicemille – Nourishing Hand Cream represents the most balanced choice. A product that demonstrates how, even on supermarket shelves, you can find valid solutions without emptying your wallet.
