A recent test conducted by Altroconsumo has compared 14 hazelnut spreads available in Italian supermarkets, and the result surprised many consumers. The Emilia Cream Backpack was awarded first place, overcoming well -known brands like Nutella, who stopped in the middle of the standings.
The test winner: Emilia dark cream backpacks
With a score of 62 points, the Emilia dark cream backpack has obtained both the recognition of “best of the test” and that of “best purchase”. This spreadable cream contains 25% of hazelnuts, an almost double percentage compared to the most famous Nutella (which contains only 13%). The 350 grams format is sold for 4.99 euros.
The other good quality creams
Behind the winner three other spreadable creams ranked that reached the good quality level:
Nutella stops in the middle of the standings
The famous Ferrero Nutella obtained only 54 points, ranking in the medium quality band. With just 13% of hazelnuts, it is among the products with the lowest percentage of dried fruit. The 220 grams jar costs 2.93 euros. The Plant Based version of the same company has also not shone, with only 48 points.
The other medium quality products
In the intermediate range they positioned themselves:
The last place went to Dolcando di Eurospin, with only 37 points and a low quality evaluation.
As Altroconsumo has evaluated the products
The investigation took place between April and May 2025, with purchases made in supermarkets and discounts of four Italian cities. The evaluation was based on three fundamental criteria:
- Composition and nutritional aspects (50% of the final vote) – The experts analyzed the quantity of hazelnuts, the content of saturated sugars and fats, the presence of additives and ultra -prompt ingredients. The nourishment of each product was taken into consideration for the overall evaluation.
- Sensory test (40% of the vote) – A panel of consumers examined the products in anonymous form, evaluating visual appearance, perfume, textures and flavor of each spreadable cream.
- Information on the label (10% of the vote) – the presence of compulsory and optional indications was verified, in addition to the clarity and readability of the information shown.
The weight of the ingredients on the evaluation
The presence of additives and the level of industrial transformation significantly influenced the results, with the products that contained artificial aromas, fructose or dyes that received lower scores. The sweeteners were particularly penalized, given that the World Health Organization is potentially problematic if taken in excessive quantities.
The problem of sugars and hazelnuts
Most spreads on the market have a composition that often disappoints the expectations of the most demanding consumers. Many products contain high quantities of added sugars and fats, while the percentage of hazelnuts can drop below 20%, aspects that make the choice of a quality product more difficult than expected.
A final consideration
Even the best products still remain industrial foods. For those looking for a healthier and genuine alternative, the solution could be prepared the spreadable cream directly at home, so that it is possible to control and dose to personally both ingredients and proportions.
