This medieval village of France puts houses for sale at 1 euro: requirements and how to apply

Amber is a French medieval village immersed in the hills of the central massif, known for its stone alleys and for the circular square with the ancient Tonda Mairie. In addition to the historical beauty, the village has become popular in recent months for a very particular reason: two houses are on sale for 1 euro.

The initiative is part of a larger urban regeneration project, aimed at bringing life and families back to the historic center, hit over the years by depopulation and empty homes. The idea is not new: even in Italy several villages have adopted similar strategies. But in Ambert the program is structured with precise rules, designed for those who really want to settle and invest in the territory.

Conditions and rules to buy

The two homes on sale are found in Rue Michel Rolle, at numbers 3 and 5. Those who buy must commit to living in the house for at least three years, complete the renovation works within 16 months under supervision of a technician and respect local regulations, in particular those of the Opah-Ru, aimed at protecting the architectural heritage. Buyers cover the notary expenses and most of the renovation costs, while being able to count on state and regional contributions.

These rules are used to ensure that the project has a real impact on the repopulation of the village, avoiding speculation and second houses. The program is part of the Petites Villes de Demain initiative, dedicated to the enhancement of small urban centers and historic houses.

How to participate in the initiative

To buy a house at 1 euro it is necessary to participate in a call valid until tomorrow, September 30, 2025. The candidacy requires the sending of a detailed renovation project, demonstrating the intention to live permanently in the house. Applications can be sent by e-mail or post directly to the Municipality of Amber, with all the details available on the official website.

The village, in addition to guaranteeing a quality of peaceful life, offers a context rich in nature, culture and local traditions, such as the production of the famous Fourme d’Abrart cheese and traditional craftsmanship. The first positive signals are already seen: new families move, a school class is reopened and public spaces are renewed, creating new job opportunities. Investing in a house at 1 euro in Amber therefore means not only to change life, but contributing to the social and cultural relaunch of a historical village, living immersed in a unique landscape between nature and medieval architecture.
