For decades, a simple country house in south-eastern Romania has kept, without knowing it, an authentic treasure of the geological past of the earth. An elderly woman, residing in the village of Colțiused one Large stone of 3.5 kilograms as a stop. Taken years before by the bed of a nearby stream, the stone had an unusual appearance, but did not arouse suspicions. Not even the thieves that one day looted the house gave it importance: they only stole some jewel of little value, leaving the mysterious boulder there.
Only many years later, a relative of the woman – heir of the house after his death in 1991 – began to feed suspicions on that object with a strange reddish shine. From that moment, curiosity turned into an extraordinary discovery: that stone was one of the greatest pieces of amber never found in intact formwith an estimated value of over one million euros.
The Ambra di Colți: a fossil treasure dating back to over 70 million years ago
The block, identified as amber, is not a mineral in the strict sense, but fossilized resin coming from prehistoric trees. It is resinous lymph which, over the age of millions of years, has been subjected to specific pressure and temperature conditions until it turns into the hard and shiny material that we know.
This Romanian variety is known as rumaniteparticularly appreciated for his Intense reddish tones. Often, the most precious pieces hold fossil remains such as insects, feathers or hair fragments. In this case, however, No inclusions were foundbut this does not detract from the value of the discovery.
The find was analyzed and authenticated by scholars of History Museum of Krakowin Poland, who confirmed its origin: the amber dates back to an inclusive period Between 38.5 and 70 million years agoplacing it between the end of the Cretaceous and the beginning of the Paleogeneepochs in which large forests rich in resin periods dominated this part of Europe.
Second Daniel Costachedirector of Provincial Museum of Buzăuthe discovery has enormous relevance both scientific That museum: Today, in fact, the piece is preserved precisely in the permanent collection of the museum, which is becoming one of the reference centers for the study of Amber in Eastern Europe.
The long tradition of fossil ambra
The village of Colțiwhere the precious fragment was found, has been known for over a century due to the presence of amber deposits. His fame dates back to the twenty of the twentieth century, when the first extractive activities began. The local variety was so appreciated as to push the Romanian geologist Oscar Helm to give it a proper name: Ambra del Buzău.
Among the main mines in the area, we remember that of Strâmbaactive until his closing by the communist regime, who declared it not profitable. The block used for decades as a stop comes in all probability from these ancient deposits.
The woman who found him had collected him in the bed of a river, unaware of his value. After his death, the house passed to a relative who, decades later, started the checks. Sold after the Romanian state, the find was recognized as national treasure In 2022 and since then he returned to the region of origin, where he represents one of the most emblematic specimens of the collection of Buzurn Ambra Museum.
Stories like this are not unique in the world: just think of the case that occurred in Michigan, where a man discovered that his stop was actually a Meteorite worth 100,000 dollars. In both cases, it is Inestimable scientific and historical objectswhich connect our present to remote and fascinating eras.
