Immersed in the evocative Tuscan countryside, San Casciano dei Bagni has earned a place of honor among the 55 Best Tourism Villages 2024 selected by UN Tourism. This prestigious recognition rewards rural destinations that have been able to enhance their cultural, natural and traditional heritage through a sustainable and inclusive tourism model.
This village that enchants with its unique mix of beauties, known mainly for its thermal waters, which flow at a constant temperature of 40 degrees from dozens of springs, the village is a place where time seems to have stopped.
The spa and the charm of nature
San Casciano owes its name to the spa, frequented since ancient times for their beneficial properties. The springs are scattered throughout the area and are immersed in a hilly landscape that embraces the village with its quiet and beauty. Walking through the stone streets, you can admire unique views of the Tuscan countryside, where the green of the hills blends with the charm of the farmhouses and olive groves.
The extraordinary archaeological discoveries
In recent years, San Casciano has gained international notoriety thanks to an exceptional discovery: a thermal sanctuary from the Etruscan and Roman era, where over 20 perfectly preserved bronze statues, thousands of coins and votive artefacts were found. Not only that, among the finds stand out votive statues, including a representation of the god Apollo, and over 10,000 ancient coins. These finds, coming from an ancient thermal sanctuary, offer rare evidence of the water cult practiced in Etruscan and Roman times. Preserved in an exceptional state thanks to the protective properties of the thermal springs, the artefacts add new details to the cultural and religious history of a place already rich in charm and tradition.
A unique treasure that tells the long history of the village and the deep connection between its waters and the civilizations that inhabited it. These finds, under study, add a cultural and historical dimension to the local attractions.
In addition to the spa and historical evidence, the village offers a complete experience for those who love the most authentic Tuscany.
Walking through the alleys, you come across small artisan shops, wine bars and trattorias where you can taste the flavors of the area, from pici handmade with local wines. Nature lovers can venture along the paths that wind through the hills, ideal for those who love walking and trekking.
