A serious road accident disrupted traffic outside the Lombard capital this night. Around 2.30 am, an articulated lorry carrying a huge load of live chickens lost control along a bend in the A7 motorway, lying on its side in the stretch between Binasco and Assago, close to the junction with the A50 West Ring Road and the Milan West Barrier.
The impact caused the vehicle to overturn and the cages to break, spilling hundreds of birds directly onto the road surface. The motorway artery heading north was immediately closed by the staff of the Milano Serravalle company, causing a total blockage of traffic and queues that reached 10 kilometers in the early hours of the morning with repercussions that are still being felt on traffic.

Rescue operations for the driver and complex clearing operations
The operations center of the Regional Emergency Urgency Company (Areu) sent an ambulance and a medical vehicle to the scene to provide first aid to the lorry driver, a 55-year-old man. The truck driver was pulled from the driver’s cab and transferred under yellow code to the Humanitas Hospital in Rozzano; fortunately his condition does not raise vital concerns.
The teams of the Milan Fire Brigade, together with the agents of the Assago Traffic Police and the Anas technicians, worked continuously throughout the night and morning. The operations required the removal of the heavy vehicle lying on the roadway and a long and delicate intervention to chase and capture the birds that remained frightened and wandering on the asphalt. Unfortunately, many of them died on impact, although for the moment no firm estimates of the toll among the animals have yet been provided.

Beyond the inevitable paralysis of highway traffic, the event dramatically brings the tragic reality of the transport of sentient creatures back to the center of attention. This dramatic episode does not in fact represent an isolated event, but is yet another announced massacre linked to the meat supply chain. Animals continue to be crammed together and treated as mere cargo and material goods, rather than as living beings endowed with sensitivity. A new avoidable tragedy that requires the immediate adoption of stringent regulations to definitively abolish the transport of live animals.
