On State Road 36, one of the busiest arteries in Brianza, during yesterday evening two horses suddenly appeared on the roadway at the exit of the tunnel heading south, in a point known for its danger where the speed and the change in light make driving complex. The alarm was raised at 7.30pm, when several cars found themselves in front of the animals with no possibility of avoiding the impact.
The impact left one of the two horses no chance
The crash, unfortunately, was inevitable. One of the cars hit one of the horses, who died instantly. The presence of the carcass on the asphalt generated an even more critical situation, causing a chain collision involving other vehicles in transit. The second horse, disoriented and frightened, ran away from the scene along the highway. It was later recovered several kilometers away, after hours of searching.
Complex rescues and haywire traffic
The firefighters of Monza and Brianza, the traffic police and the healthcare personnel of Areu intervened on site. The rescue operations proved to be particularly delicate: in addition to freeing the occupants of the vehicles, the teams had to manage the presence of the deceased animal on the roadway.
In total, five people were involved, including a 6-year-old child. Three of them were transported to hospital under yellow code at San Gerardo in Monza. No one is in danger of dying, but the shock of the accident was significant. Traffic along State Road 36 suffered heavy slowdowns for hours, with extensive queues and temporary blocks during safety operations.
The mystery of the horses’ escape
Now the main issue of the investigation remains: how the two horses managed to reach the road. The first hypotheses speak of a possible escape from a riding stable in the area, but checks are still underway. The police are reconstructing the movements of the animals and verifying any responsibilities related to their custody.
