URBAN Photo Awards 2024: the flood in Emilia Romagna among the winning photos

Every year many photographers from all over the world participate in the prestigious “URBAN Photo Awards” photography competition, now in its 15th edition.

The highly anticipated awards ceremony was held on Saturday 26 October at the Auditorium of the Revoltella Museum, in Trieste, where the overall winner for 2024 was announced: his name is Sanchayan Chowdhury, while the shot with which the Bengali photographer won the title of “Photographer of the Year” is “Eid Journey”.

His overcrowded train, immortalized in Chittagong (Bangladesh) during an important religious festival, won over the president of the jury, Harry Gruyaert, triumphing over his competitors.

In the “Projects & Portfolio” section, “La Vida Lenta” by the Polish Krzysztof Bednarski triumphed, while “STEEL, SEA AND SORROW” by the Italian Maria Pansini won over the jury in the “URBAN Book Award” section.

This year, new categories and new awards have been added, explains the official website of the competition, including the “URBAN Zine Award”, dedicated to projects printed in zine format, the “Special Artistic Sensitivity Award”, and the “Patricia D . Richards Legacy Award”, dedicated to Under 35s from the Projects and Portfolio section.

The “URBAN Zine Award” saw the triumph of the Italian Nadia Marmondi with “Divenire”, a project of which the following photo is part.

Marie-Laure Vareilles won the “Artistic Sensitivity” award with “AVATAR’S MOUNTAIN PINTER…”, while Ekatarina Frolova won the “Patricia D. Richards Legacy Award”.

Max Cavallari won the “URBAN Press Award” thanks to the “Drowned Choice” project, which includes numerous photos. One of them portrays a boy on a bicycle in the middle of high water, following the flood in Lugo, Emilia-Romagna.

Mauro Zorer was selected for the prize exhibition at the Sartorio Museum with “22 JUNE 1944 – THE CHILDREN’S MARCH”. Here is one of the winning photographs that are part of his work.

We also point out Subhran Karmakar, the winner of “URBAN Photo Arena”, a section dedicated to young people under 35, who triumphed with the photo “Leap of Faith”.
