The beginning of the year is a time for good resolutions: why not start with a healthier and more ethical diet? Veganuary, the international campaign that invites you to experiment with a 100% plant-based diet for the entire month, starts again on January 1st. From 2015 to today it has involved over 2 million people around the world, who have decided to put themselves to the test. Born in the United Kingdom ten years ago, it arrived in Italy in 2020 thanks toessereanimali, an organization committed to the protection of farmed animals and the official partner of the initiative.

Why embrace the challenge

The challenge is an opportunity to eat more consciously and make a difference for the climate and animals.

“Participating in Veganuary means taking care of yourself and the planet, one meal at a time. Veganuary is not “becoming vegan forever”, it’s simply trying for 31 days, discovering new things, seeing how you feel and deciding what to do next. – explains Valentina Taglietti, head of sustainable nutrition atessere animali. – The reasons for signing up are many: for health, because eating plant-based means more energy, better digestion and reduction of the risk of chronic diseases; for the environment, because it is one more effective gestures to reduce one’s ecological footprint; animals and a more compassionate food system; and finally for curiosity: January is the perfect time to discover new flavors and start the year on the right foot!

What Veganuary Italia offers for free

According to a YouGov survey, in January 2025, 30% of Italians (around 17 million people) have heard of Veganuary and 2% have actively participated. A sign that attention towards more sustainable food choices is no longer a niche. The current food system accounts for up to 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to 15 million avoidable deaths each year, according to the EAT-Lancet Commission.

Another recent study shows that a plant-based diet can reduce CO₂ emissions by 46%, cut water consumption by 7% and land use by 33% compared to a diet that includes animal proteins. All good reasons to start the challenge!
