Vela 9, the incredible all-Italian 20W wind turbine that is compact, portable and… foldable!

There Sailing 9created by engineers from the Polytechnic University of Milan, is a portable wind turbine with an innovative design. Compact, light and foldable, it represents a concrete alternative to make renewable energy accessible to all. The entire structure, when folded, barely measures 51.5×7.5cmmaking it easy to transport and install anywhere.

Despite its maximum power of only 20 watts, this wind turbine promises efficiency and low environmental impact. The structure was designed with carbon fiberswhile the blades are made with recycled fabrics coming from nautical sails. The attention to sustainability is also reflected in the production methods: the entire turbine is manufactured using 3D printingthus reducing both costs and industrial waste.

A design that looks to the future

Thanks to its innovative concept, the Vela 9 has already received prestigious awards such asIF Design Students Award 2024 and recognition to Milan Design Week 2024. Its design not only revolutionizes the practical aspect of wind turbines, but also offers an alternative to traditional energy sources, adapting to both urban and rural environments.

One of the strengths of Vela 9 is its ability to operate continuously, 24 hours a dayovercoming the limitation of solutions such as solar panels, which require light to operate. The development team doesn’t stop here: new, more powerful versions are already planned, designed to meet greater energy needs and open up new markets.
