After a few days of respite, a new disturbed phase returns to affect Italy. The first part of the worsening involves today, Tuesday 6 October, especially some sectors of Tuscany and Lazio, where the Civil Protection has issued a yellow alert for storm risk and hydrogeological risk.
This is the beginning of a more unstable phase which could extend to other areas of the country in the coming days, with rain, showers, thunderstorms and a gradual drop in temperatures.
Thunderstorms between Tuscany and Lazio
During the day, precipitation will mainly affect southern Tuscany and Lazio, with showers that may locally become thunderstorms. Attention concerns in particular the Tyrrhenian areas and the northern sectors of Lazio, where the phenomena could be more intense and concentrated over time. Complicating the situation will be the strengthening southern winds, with rough seas and possible risk of storm surges, particularly in the northern Tyrrhenian Sea.
Meteorological simulations indicate the possibility of locally significant accumulations, especially between Tuscia and southern Tuscany. However, these are forecast scenarios that will need to be verified with updates in the next few hours: very high amounts of rain concentrated in a short time can increase the risk of flooding and hydrogeological criticalities. Possible showers and thunderstorms also in the Rome area.
Where the yellow alert is expected
For Tuesday 6 October the Civil Protection has classified the alert for thunderstorms and hydrogeological risk in some areas of Lazio and Tuscany as yellow.
In Lazio the following are affected: Southern Coastal Basins, Rome Basins and Northern Coastal Basins. In Tuscany the alert involves the following areas: Ombrone Grossetano-Costa, Isole, Fiora and Albegna-Costa and Giglio and Etruria-South Coast.
The yellow alert corresponds to an ordinary critical situation, but during more intense storms, localized flooding, minor rises in watercourses, difficulties in drainage systems and traffic problems may occur. For this reason it is advisable to pay particular attention to underpasses, roads subject to flooding and areas near ditches and watercourses.
In the coming days the picture could become even more unstable
Today’s disturbance represents only the first phase of a meteorological picture destined to become more unstable during the week.
An increase in cloud cover is expected across much of the country on Wednesday 7 October, with new rainfall that could also reach the North-West. On the Tyrrhenian side, however, the risk of showers and thunderstorms will continue. The most organized worsening is expected between Thursday 8 and Friday 9 October, when an autumn disturbance is expected to cross much of Italy.
In the North, showers and thunderstorms are possible in the Alpine and pre-Alpine regions, with rainfall that may subsequently also reach Lombardy, Triveneto and Emilia-Romagna. In the Alps the snow level could progressively decrease. In the Centre, instability could once again involve Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria, with locally intense thunderstorms and possible hailstorms. In the South, however, the phenomena should concentrate above all on Campania and the Tyrrhenian sectors, while elsewhere the weather will remain more variable and windy.
However, the picture remains evolving: to know the intensity and precise distribution of the phenomena it will be important to follow the updates from the Civil Protection and meteorological services in the next few hours.
