In 2025 forget or ignore the payment of the car tax can have more serious consequences than in the past. The regions, which directly manage the possession fee, are adopting more punctual control procedures and apply updated penalties, in line with the changes introduced by Legislative Decree no. 87/2024, in force from 1 September 2024.
This reform has remodeled the tax sanctions system, including that relating to the stamp, making the calculation of fines and interests for those who pay late. In concrete terms, the more days they pass, the more the account salt. And for those who completely ignore the notices, the risk of administrative detention or even radiation from the Pra becomes real, even if not automatic.
How the new penalties for those who pay the car tax in 2025 work
The new system maintains the logic of the industrious repentance, which allows you to get in order spontaneously, but with growing penalties based on the days of delay.
Here are the new percentages introduced starting from 1 September 2024:
| Days late | Percentage of sanction |
| Within 15 days | 0.08% for each day of delay (“fast” repentance) |
| Within 30 days | 1.25% of the amount due (short repentance) |
| From 31st to 90th day | 1.39% (“medium” repentance) |
| In 91 days and one year | 3.13% (“long” repentance) |
| Over a year (before assessment) | 3.57% of the amount due |
To these percentages must always be added the legal interest calculated day by day.
However, if the Region launches a assessment procedure, the sanction can reach up to 30% of the unrealized amount, according to the provisions of art. 13 of Legislative Decree 471/1997. To avoid this threshold, it is essential to intervene immediately, before the notice is notified.
Failure to pay the stamp: the notices, the detention and the risk of radiation
When a motorist does not pay the stamp, the region can send a notice of assessment with the amount due, penalties and interest included. If the debt remains unsolved, further phases start:
This last passage is not automatic or immediate, but possible: the radiation involves the cancellation of the vehicle from the public archives, the retreat of plates and the registration of the circulation, and the impossibility of using the car until the re -entering and balance of all the backward stamps are provided.
Car stamp and prescription: after how long it is no longer due
The car stamp is prescribed three years from the expiry date, but the count can start every time the Region sends an official communication (for example a reminder or a notice of assessment).
This means that even if several years have passed, the debt can remain valid if in the meantime, acts have been notified that interrupt the prescription.
What really changes in 2025 compared to previous years
The main novelty of 2025 concerns the new sanctioning regime, more detailed and rigid. In summary:
In short: in 2025 only the amount to be paid does not change, but the overall approach of regional administrations, more attentive and automated. It is therefore convenient to always check your position on the ACI portal or on the Region website before the deadline, to avoid unpleasant surprises.
