A sprig of rosemary next to the front door. It is an image that is still often encountered in Italy, especially in rural areas and in Mediterranean homes: a vase near the entrance, on the balcony, next to the gate. Behind it there is a very common aromatic plant, but also an ancient symbolism linked to protection, memory and good omen.
Because right next to the door
The doorstep has never been considered just any point. It is the border between inside and outside, the place of passage, the one where you let in what you want to welcome and try to keep away what could disturb the tranquility of the family.
Many popular customs were born around the door and rosemary, with its evergreen leaves, intense scent and resistance, has over time become one of the symbols associated with the care and protection of the home. In the peasant world it had not only a decorative value. It grew easily near homes, was used in cooking every day and was part of domestic life.

Does rosemary keep mosquitoes away?
Rosemary is often attributed with properties against insects thanks to the essential oils present in the leaves. Some aromatic compounds of the plant have been studied for their possible repellent effect, but the presence of a simple vase near the door hardly changes the situation in the case of many insects. Rosemary can contribute with its aroma, but to truly reduce the presence of mosquitoes and other unwanted guests, more targeted interventions on the environment are needed.
How to grow rosemary near the entrance
Potted rosemary is a fairly simple plant to manage. It mainly needs light, draining soil and little water. The most frequent mistake is leaving stagnation in the saucer: the roots suffer when they remain immersed in humidity for too long. In the hot months it may require some more watering, while during the winter the needs decrease.
To keep it compact, light pruning every now and then is enough, collecting the youngest twigs for the kitchen and removing the dry parts. Even when a branch loses its freshness it can have a second life: left to dry it retains part of its scent and can be used in the kitchen or as a simple natural decoration.
