Wolf hunt: the European Parliament approves the declassing of protection. What happens now?

Europe turns the back to wolves. The European Parliament has in fact just voted in favor of the European Commission proposal to weaken the protection of the speciesthus making the hunting to the wolf again possible.

Now the word passes to the Council of the Union which with its decision could condition the trend of theprocess legislative, imposing a new second reading passage to the European Parliament where the automatic application of the emergency procedure is not provided. The only amendment to the vote today, which asked for the rejection of the proposal, was rejected.

As for theItalythe assembly of the Chamber of Deputies and the agriculture commissions of the Chamber and Senate have already voted in favor of the proposal to downgrade the species. And in the event that the mountain bill is approved in its current form, which provides for the automatic adjustment to the modifications of the habitat directive resulting from the complete implementation of the Bern Convention, the downgrading of the Wolf would be immediately operational in our country, without the need to adapt national legislation.

With this vote, the Member States will have greater freedom of management of the wolf populations, also through felling. In Italy, it must be remembered, it will immediately incite this directive and, unfortunately, the downgrading of the wolf to our country will be automatic, they say from the Oipa.

It is, in fact, a decision that risks seriously compromising the delicate balances of ecosystems, as well as threatening the survival of a fundamental wild species.

However, the definitive word, hunters, breeders, their political supporters and their lipstrings of extermination of wolves can still be defeated – declares Massimo Vitturi, the wild animal manager of the Lav – and we continue to do everything possible to stop them.

Many associations that intervened in the appeal before the European Court of Justice asking for the cancellation of the declassing of the wolf protection status. The outcome will only be foreseen in a few months.
