Zerocalcare returns in 2026 on Netflix, the title of the new animated series has been announced at Lucca Comics

After the success of Tear along the edges And This world won’t make me badZerocalcare returns to Netflix with a new animated series entitled Two pennies. The announcement came during Lucca Comics & Games 2025, where the Roman cartoonist, aka Michele Rech, revealed the title in a completely unexpected way: a giant installation of the Armadillo, the famous alter ego of the protagonist, appeared in Piazza San Michele, inviting fans to guess the name of the new project.

The public participated enthusiastically, leaving writings, drawings and hypotheses on blackboards and panels, becoming part of a special video which culminated with the official reveal of the title by the author. The gesture perfectly reflects Zerocalcare’s style: ironic, direct and deeply linked to collective participation. As with previous productions, too Two pennies will see the voice of Valerio Mastandrea in the role of the Armadillo, confirming a now iconic artistic partnership.

The series is produced by Movimenti Production, part of the Banijay Kids & Family group, in collaboration with Bao Publishing, the leading publishing house for the cartoonist’s works. Zerocalcare signs the direction and the screenplay, but the details of the plot still remain shrouded in mystery. The author joked about the title, explaining that it will be called Two pennies and not Two penniesinviting the Romans to “don’t take it too hard”.

Zerocalcare and the voice of the suburbs

In recent years, the cartoonist has shown a strong attention to social issues and urban suburbs, always told with sensitivity and realism. During a meeting at the Quarticciolo Ribelle, he underlined how these areas are often represented only through clichés, while “Normal people live on the outskirts, excluded from services but capable of making do“. A vision that will probably also find space in the new series, where humor will once again be intertwined with social reflection. With Two penniesZerocalcare promises to return to talking about everyday life with depth and sarcasm, mixing popular language, introspection and social criticism, in that unique style that has made him one of the most loved authors on the contemporary Italian scene.
