A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan today, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported. Following the strong tremor, a tsunami warning was issued. Experts predict waves up to 3 meters high could hit Iwate, Aomori and Hokkaido prefectures.
The earthquake occurred at 4.53pm (local time) in Pacific waters off the northern prefecture of Iwate, at a depth of 10 km. From what emerges, there would be some collapses in buildings located hundreds of kilometers away from the epicenter. Several reports also come from Tokyo. For the moment there is no news of victims or injuries.
Due to the intense quake, the company that operates the Tohoku Shinkansen high-speed train announced the suspension of traffic between Tokyo station and Shin-Aomori station. Meanwhile, the prime minister’s office said it had set up a team to handle the emergency.
